- Domestic flights with checked bags: Check in at least 45 minutes before departure
- International flights: Check in at least 60 minutes before departure
Check-in will close 45 minutes prior to departure time, to allow sufficient time for TSA screening. The TSA requires 45 minutes to complete the screening process for checked baggage. Passengers who have not checked in at least 45 minutes prior to departure will be unable to board the flight. Carry-on Bag
You can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item for free on most domestic and international flights. But there are a few rules you’ll need to follow.
Make sure your bags meet our size limits before you get to the airport.
Carry-on bags
Your Carry-on bag must fit in the overhead bin, so it must be 9 in x 14 in x 22 in (23 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm). When measuring your bag, be sure to include the handle and wheels.
Personal items
These items must fit under the seat in front of you, so they must be 9 in x 10 in x 17 in (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm). Common things include purses, backpacks and laptop bags.
If you’re at the airport and not sure if your bag is the right size, you can use our bag sizers to measure your bag.
If you are connecting to a flight on another airline, please review that airline’s carry-on baggage policies as well.
*Passengers are advised to carry-on medicines, keys, passport, and travel documents

Save time at the airport by prepaying for your bags. If you’re traveling on a United or United Express flight within the U.S., you can use your miles to pay the baggage fees before check-in.

Depending on where and how you travel, you may have to pay to check your bag. Use United’s baggage fee calculator to see how much it’ll cost.

Pets
We no longer let you check your pets through the PetSafe program. Pets can only fly in cargo when traveling with certain active-duty military or State Department employees. If you plan to fly with your pet, they must be a cat or dog and stay in the cabin with you (if there’s space available).
Some destinations don’t accept pets. Be sure to double-check before your flight.
On most flights, you can bring up to 2 pets per person. You must buy 2 seats if you’re bringing 2 pets. The second seat needs to be next to your assigned seat, so you can care for both pets.
Make sure your pet fits
While there are no weight or breed limitations for pets, they must travel in either a hard-sided or soft-sided carrier. This carrier must fit under the seat in front of you or you cannot fly with your pet. The only animals allowed on planes without a pet carrier are service animals.
Hard-sided carrier
Holiday and Peak Travel
Reminder that holiday and peak travel times can make the pre-flight process slower. Please allow for extra time to arrive and check-in.
